Ryan Young possesses a rare ability to make his instrument sing. First gaining recognition with the release of his debut album in 2017, he was immediately acclaimed for his intimate yet inventive approach to traditional melodies. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most distinctive voices on today's Scottish fiddle scene. His music breathes new life into ancient, sometimes forgotten tunes, allowing them to unfold with greater breadth and freedom than is often associated with the dance forms of so-called Celtic music.
Rooted in the great fiddle-and-guitar tradition so central to the music of Scotland and Ireland, his playing seeks not virtuoso display but the inner resonance of tone, phrasing, and melodic breath. In his hands, the Scottish and Irish traditions become music of exceptional subtlety and emotional depth.
Through the richness of his inflections, accents, and tonal colours, Ryan Young's deeply personal artistry reveals the profoundly vocal nature of the fiddle.
