Between Land and Sea

Rhythms and Breaths of the South

Salvatore Vinci: zampogna a paro
Domenico Morello: voice, zampogne, organetto a bucca (mouth harmonica), tamburello, flutes, etc.
Vincenzo Di Sanzo: zampogna a paro
Sebastiano Battaglia: zampogna, organetto a bucca, tamburello
Luca Schirru: launeddas

In Southern Italy, both on the mainland and the islands, the alleyways and homes of villages have echoed for centuries with voices and traditional instruments, at once intimate and powerful. In the sumptuous neo-Baroque setting of Les Salons in Geneva, this concert offers a rare opportunity to discover the zampognari (bagpipe players) of Basilicata, Calabria, and Sicily, joined by the polyphonic breath of the launeddas—the triple clarinets of Sardinia—alongside the organetto (small diatonic accordion), flutes, tamburelli, and the lira (bowed fiddle), rarely heard on stage.

Around Salvatore Vinci, one of today’s great masters of the Sicilian zampogna, the program showcases multiple facets of a repertoire in constant motion. The musicians, all multi-instrumentalists, weave together timbres, breaths, and rhythms with freedom and intensity. The leaping accents of the tamburelli converse with the spirit of songs and dances—culminating in the tarantella, an irresistible call to joy and togetherness.
