For reasons beyond our control, the Bulgarian music concert and workshops are cancelled

The duet of the zurna oboe and the davul drum is one of the most popular instrumental pieces in the Balkan-Turkish repertoire. These two instruments appear to be inseparable both in their sonic vigour and their expressive power. For generations, those who play them have juggled modal improvisation (taksim) with the themes of popular music. The musicians invited tonight are recognised as some of the greatest masters of this art, both in Bulgaria and internationally.

Descended from a long line of zurnadji (zurna players), son of the legendary Demtchuk Kurtov, Samir Kurtov embodies the soul of Balkan zurna today. In addition to his many performances on concert stages around the world, he travels tirelessly "on the ground" throughout Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey to play at weddings and various rituals (carnival, wrestling competitions etc.). This is a necessary condition for him to continue to drink from the sources of tradition, i.e. to maintain links with the inhabitants of these countries - the spirit of the dance, the conviviality of the festivals - which nourish his inspiration.

Samir Kurtov will be in dialogue with davul master Martin Dimitrov and singer Demir Kurtov (Samir Kurtov trio).
