4 - 5 July
Through the practice of sabar and traditional percussion, Mbar Ndiaye invites participants to explore the powerful and vibrant rhythms of Senegal. These workshops highlight the dynamism and musical diversity of Sub-Saharan Africa, guiding participants in learning rhythmic structures and developing ensemble playing skills.
Particular attention will be given to the exploration of gesture in direct connection with pulse and bodily expression, forming a central aspect of the workshop. Driven by the vitality and generosity of Mbar Ndiaye, participants will experience a liberating and immersive journey into the heart of Senegalese musical traditions.
Born into a renowned Senegalese griot family, storyteller and percussionist Mbar Ndiaye passionately carries forward the heritage of his ancestors. From an early age, he grew up immersed in an environment deeply rooted in the musical traditions of West Africa — particularly Mandingue culture — absorbing the rhythms, stories, and values transmitted by the griots.
His work is dedicated both to preserving the memory of traditional repertoires and to sharing them with new audiences by building bridges between cultures.
Recognised for his talent and vibrant stage presence, he has accompanied or opened for many internationally acclaimed artists, including Ouza Diallo, Baaba Maal, Youssou N’Dour, Salif Keita, and Amadou & Mariam.
