Mysterious and magic, throat singing finds its roots in the sounds of nature and shamanic rituals. Sometimes called ‘doubled voice’, ‘overtone singing’ or ‘harmonic singing’, it has never ceased to astonish Europeans since they first discovered it. In fact, it wasn’t until the invention of the first recording instruments that the Academy of Sciences in Paris believed it even existed! Today we are only just beginning to understand its complex workings.

The group Huun-Huur-Tu plunges us into the ancient history and contemporary expression of the art of khöömii (Tuvano-Mongolian throat singing) by combining the traditional repertoire with recent creations infused with the soul of the steppes and nomadic populations of Mongolia and the Republic of Tuva. Equally proficient in song as on the famous ‘horsehead fiddle’ or morin khuur, the toshpulu lute, the mouth harp and various percussion instruments, the four partners sweep us up in a whirlwind of vocals and instruments. In 2009, UNESCO added khöömii to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Comment au beau milieu des steppes de Mongolie, une famille de nomades va-t-elle se retrouver confrontée à l’entêtement d’une chamelle qui refuse de nourrir son petit ? De ce qui n’aurait pu être qu’une banale anecdote, la réalisatrice Byamasuren Davaa a su dérouler avec tact et poésie tout un pan de la culture traditionnelle mongole. Ce film se situe à mi-chemin entre le documentaire et la fiction, le fait divers et le conte.  Les acteurs n’interprètent pas des rôles mais collent à la réalité des faits conférant au jeu une sincérité touchante. Le spectateur découvre un monde en apparence désolé mais qui se révèle empli de la musique de la nature : celle des animaux, du vent, des rivières qui accompagne la vie quotidienne et nourrit l’inspiration des musiciens traditionnels. Celle du chant accompagné de la vièle cheval, instrument emblématique de la Mongolie, et clé d’une surprenante intrigue.
