This film tells the tale of an ancient Finnish legend. It opens with a heart-breaking lament, which gives birth to images and a narrative universe of great emotional force. Imbued with an interplay of lights from the polar circle, punctuated with the magic of the shaman’s drum, this story of a women who transforms into a white reindeer every night invites us into the singular imaginings of the Sámi tradition. A rare and dense film, with an expressionist element that fascinated Jean-Cocteau and conquered the jury at Cannes (1953).
