A concert in two stages that plunges us into the heart of the Greco-Ottoman tradition following two singular musical itineraries.

Evgenio Voulgaris, on the great "bowed lute" yayli tambur, leads the way and guides our steps. He invites us to share an emotional and spiritual journey through the Ottoman musical tradition of yesterday and today. Modal improvisation (the art of makam) is the musician's privileged confidant. As he is inspired, he explores the rich palette of colours of an instrument that is rare both in its technique and its expressiveness.
Then, it's time for Rebetiko. Originating in the large cities of Greece and Asia Minor, this musical genre developed from the 1920s onwards, gradually being enriched by various influences, to become today one of the great emblems of Greek music.
The Ourania-Evgenios duo relies on the multiple harmonic and polyphonic possibilities of the santouri zither and on the very fine melodic potential of the 'ûd lute to highlight the alternately pathetic and nostalgic, violent and hedonistic character of the songs in the repertoire of Rebetiko.
